INFO

Quarna Monte Mazzuccone ring :14.5 km,+930 m, medium-challenging difficulty

One of the most complete rings in the Lake Orta area, which combines nature, views and traces of alpine life. Development of 14.5 km with 930 m of positive elevation gain and as many downhill, estimated duration in 5-6 hours at hiking wheelbase. Classification: medium-challenging (E). Various land: wooded path, open ridge, dirt road and pastures.

Development of the path
It starts from the village of Quarna Sopra (910 m), with its stone houses and narrow streets, and climbs through a forest full of beech and chestnut trees up to Monte Saccarello (1,220 m). Reaching the top of Mount Mazzoccone (1,424 m), the landscape suddenly opens onto Lake Orta, with the island of San Giulio clearly visible in the center of the waters; on clear days the gaze sweeps up to Monte Rosa and the peaks of the Val Grande. Continue along the ridge to Monte Croce (1,643 m), a peak less frequented but with wild charm. The descent passes through the Alpe Camasca (1,230 m), an ancient pasture with stone huts, a chapel and a fountain, in a pastoral context still well recognizable. From here you return to Quarna Sopra.

Points of interest
The Alpe Camasca deserves a stopover: in addition to the renovated huts, there is a plaque reminiscent of Captain Beltrami and the events of the 1943 Liberation. The route coincides in part with the Beltrami Path, a partisan itinerary that connects Omegna to Pieve Vergonte. From the Crest of the Mazzoccone the view of the lake is considered one of the most beautiful of Upper Piedmont.

Return
The return takes place through the Alpe Camasca and then on a smooth dirt road to Quarna Sopra, closing the ring. The final stretch is on a large mule track, with small slopes.

Practical notes Quarna Monte Mazzuccone ring

Hiking shoes with carved soles and good grip are recommended, especially for stretches on ridge and rock. Bring abundant water: the supply points are limited to the Alpe Camasca and the villages. Best period: from spring to late autumn; in summer leave early to avoid the heat in the middle hours. The summit of Monte Croce can have residual snow until late spring. The course does not present special technical difficulties but requires a good training for the overall difference in height.
